A spokesperson with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said Officer Curtis Scott was shot in a scuffle inside Northcrest Medical Center's emergency room in Springfield.

Investigators said Scott struggled with Malchico Gardener over his service weapon. They said two other officers joined in the struggle.

"As they were fighting for the gun, the officers themselves got their hands on the gun. Chico Gardener pulled the trigger and fired one shot that went into the ground, ricocheted up and hit Curtis Scott in the abdomen area," said Springfield Police Chief Mike Wilhoit.

Investigators said that the bullet went under Scott's bulletproof vest and caused the injury.

Scott was flown to Vanderbilt Medical Center and was treated and released for his injuries Sunday.

Gardener was arrested in connection with the scuffle and the shooting.

"Incidents like this is why we do have security on staff, especially weekends and nights," said hospital representative Rob Deberry.

Deberry said the incident did not affect the hospital and its operations.
