Kenneth Parker said he thought the scrap fire was out and had gone into his house Sunday afternoon, but embers spread the fire about 100 feet, igniting the barn where the horse, named Shaker, was kept, southeast of Murfreesboro.

"He was a 21-year-old walking horse stud that I've had for 16 years. Things happen. Tomorrow's my birthday," Parker said emotionally.

He had never shown his horse in competition, but kept it as a pet.

The total value of the structure was about $50,000.
