Richard Whiteshield, a worker with Tennessee Technical Consultants of Hendersonville, was pronounced dead on arrival and John Daryl Kemper, 45, was critically injured.

The building is the former location of A to Z Antiques and was to be demolished so the brick and steel could be sold for salvage.

“The first company that reported to the scene reported a building collapse. They began an initial search where they determined that we had one person that was critical that was inside the property. We transported the individual to the Vanderbilt emergency room. The second person, unfortunately, had expired on the scene -- was dead on arrival,” Metro Fire Chief Charles Shannon said.

Shannon said crews searched the remaining debris for anyone else who might have been inside the building.

Search dogs and the urban search and rescue team were called to the scene to assist emergency personnel.

“We want to make sure there is nobody else in this property. The construction team advised us that everybody else was out, but as a precaution, we just want to be sure. We will continue this process as the police department begins their investigation. Then we will remove that individual,” Shannon said.

The workers were inside the building to cut off the gas lines.

Tennessee Technical Consultants is a subcontracter for Nashville Gas.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the accident along with the Nashville Fire marshal and building codes officials.

According to the men who knew him, Friday was the last day of work for Whiteshield, because he was quitting and moving back to Florida.

Kemper's status was upgraded to stable later Friday.
