FRANKLIN, Tenn. -- State investigators are now checking out Franklin companies that might be responsible for an excesses amount of toxic chemicals in Liberty Creek.
The State Department of Environment and Conservation recently tested the creek's water. Results released on Wednesday confirm the chemicals toluene and acetone are above the recommended levels.
One or both of these chemicals can be found in paint and shops or industries that make plastic. For months, people who live along the creek have been complaining of a foul odor coming from the water.Currently investigators do not know if they are dealing with illegal dumping or a leak."We certainly would say that you shouldn't play in the creek right now but its not a health issue at this point," said Dana Coleman of the Department of Environment and Conservation.Anyone found polluting the creek could face possible jail time and heavy fines.
