Joshua Castle is learning how to read and write all over again at an Atlanta hospital.

On Wednesday, for the first time, he was able to briefly talk to Channel 4 about his progress.

A simple task like reaching for a water bottle is a tough task for Castle after the crash.

But it's hard for doctors to explain how a boy who was in a coma, unable to breathe and near death just weeks ago, is already moving about.

In March, a car hit the Northwest High School 10th-grader when he crossed Purple Heart Highway in Clarksville while he walked to school.

Two weeks ago, Castle left Nashville to start brain therapy at a hospital in Atlanta.

On Wednesday, his mother sent Channel 4 home videos showing how her son's rehabilitation progress.

Castle lost one of his legs, and still has significant brain damage, but he's learning the basics, like counting and writing his name all over again.

His parents know he may never be the same sarcastic, athletic boy he was, but realize he's beating the odds by living.

The teen's doctors said he could be released from the Atlanta hospital by mid-June. From there, he'll start outpatient therapy in Nashville.
