In Clarksville, it was a case of bad timing for one robbery suspect.

Video: Suspect Captured After Ramming Truck Into Store

A smash-and-grab robbery at Allen’s Gun Shop on Dover Drive was caught on surveillance video.

"He was an idiot. Let's just be brutally frank. He's under the influence of alcohol. He's already been seen in the store. They have surveillance tapes. They know who he is. There are cameras rolling outside," said Ted Denny of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department.

Police said Donald Richardson was caught on video driving a 1988 Mazda truck, smashing through concrete and a glass window of the gun shop.

He was quickly arrested by a deputy on routine patrol at the time.

“As he’s coming out with these World War II rifles, he's met by one of our fresh young Montgomery County Sheriff's deputies," said Denny.

Store owner James Allen said Richardson had been in his store several times before the smash-and-grab robbery.

Richardson is accused of trying to steal vintage WWII guns that would sell for about $200 on the street, but only 50 feet away there were some automatic guns that were priced as much as $1,000.

"Why he went for those particular guns is unknown to anybody because there were a lot more valuable guns that he could have went for," said Allen.

It's already costing Allen $5,000 to repair the damage to his store. He's also installing metal barriers in case someone else gets the same idea.

Montgomery County Deputy Kelly Potter, who police said interrupted the robbery, will get a letter of commendation on Wednesday at the sheriff's headquarters.
