NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Many organizations are trying new methods this year to get donations. Some are high-tech, others are simple, but the goal of fundraising is the same.
The Salvation Army now has a iPhone application to raise money, along with Facebook and Twitter."We've had to become very aggressive, if you will, on how we find ways to raise revenues from a populous that is very computer savvy," said Maj. Rob Vincent of the Salvation Army. But it isn't about being trendy -- it's a necessity in an economy where money is even tighter than before.Without donations, one Nashville warehouse can't be filled with clothing and toys."These are families that are asking for the first time," said Vincent. This year, the American Red Cross is changing its approach, too."The Red Cross is the insurance policy for our entire community," said Jill Gorin, American Red Cross. For the first time ever, the Red Cross is printing a holiday catalog. You'll never touch the merchandise. Instead, it will be stockpiled for someone in need."You can buy, you know, a hot meal for someone. You can shelter someone. And so all those things we're going to need for the next disaster, we're trying to get people to think about it now," said Gorin. If you're thinking about making a charitable donation, online or in person, remember that if you give a gift before the end of the year, you'll be able to deduct it from your taxes.
