The sour economy has become a sweet time for scam artists.

The Federal Trade Commission said it's getting tough on a new wave of cons.

The FTC has launched a crackdown dubbed Operation Short Change and is going after scammers who promise jobs, government grant money and the chance to make a living working from home.

But when you pay your money, you're often left with nothing in return.

Several state authorities said they've seen a spike in complaints from people who've been ripped off.
