NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Gov. Phil Bredesen said the federal government has taken steps that will ensure Tennesseans have an adequate supply of gasoline in the wake of a sudden panic over gas shortages.
Video: Some Gas Stations Run Out Of FuelAAA East Tennessee spokesman Don Lindsey said there was a run Thursday on gas stations in the area fueled by speculation about the impact of Hurricane Ike on gas supplies and refineries in the Gulf Coast.The Environmental Protection Agency has waived specific fuel standards that are imposed during summer months on some Tennessee counties to help control emissions from motor vehicles.Bredesen said the waiver allows for the sale of available supplies of gasoline that has higher volatility limits.The EPA and the Department of Energy will allow the early use of winter fuel in Tennessee and eight other Southeast states. AG Issues Price Gouging Alert Tennessee Attorney General Bob Cooper asked Tennesseans on Friday to be on the lookout for potential price gougers.Some individuals may try to take advantage of potential victims by unreasonably raising the prices they charge for essential goods and services, including gasoline, said Copper in a press release.Consumers who believe they may have been charged an unreasonably price for a good, commodity or service should contact the Division of Consumer Affairs toll-free at 800-342-8385 or 615-741-4737.Wholesale prices are now at a record high along the Gulf Coast and 20 percent of the refineries in the region have stopped production.Some gas stations in Nashville and other parts of the state are already limiting how much gas customers can buy.Kangaroo Gas stations all over Tennessee are reacting to the threat of Hurricane Ike. They have posted signs asking people to limit their gas purchase to 10 gallons each.But AAA of Tennessee and the Tennessee Marketers Association, which is made up of fuel wholesalers, are encouraging people to remain calm.A Kangaroo station in Smyrna had some of the cheapest gas in town at $3.49 a gallon on Friday morning, but quickly ran out.The Category 2 storm has maximum sustained winds near 105 mph. Evacuation orders are in effect for low-lying sections of the Houston area.
