Channel 4 News first learned on Wednesday that a lot of people are not getting the amount of money they're supposed to be receiving.

The IRS said on Thursday that it's figuring out who has been impacted by the glitch and that checks for children who did not get a payment will be sent out in July.

Officials from the IRS office in Nashville have acknowledged some mistakes are being made.

"We're hearing that some people are not getting credit on their stimulus payment for qualifying children that were on their tax return," said Dan Boone of the IRS.

Each adult who files a tax return gets $600. Each child under 17 years of age is supposed to get $300. However, in many families, children are being left out of the equation.

The IRS is still trying to determine the size and scope of the problem, but agents are confident that it extends beyond Tennessee.

"We're looking into it and hope to have some answers very soon," said Boone.

If residents run into a problem, they should contact the government or an accountant and the necessary changes will be made.

The IRS said taxpayer error and a software problem that's commonly used by CPAs and professional tax preparers are to blame for the problems.
