Morneau Takes AL Weekly Honors

(Sports Network) - Minnesota Twins first baseman Justin Morneau has been named the American League Player of the Week for the period ending July 5.

Morneau, who was named to the AL All-Star team on Sunday, hit .480 (12- for-25), topping the A.L. with four home runs and 26 total bases. He knocked in eight runs in six games, as the Twins won four of their six games for the week.

The 28-year-old slugger homered in three consecutive games to start the week and during a three-game set with Detroit, was 9-for-15 with two homers, two doubles and five RBI.

The 2006 AL MVP is batting a robust .323 this season with 21 homers and 69 RBI through 82 games. This marks his second career weekly award.

Others considered for this week's honor included Rangers' outfielders David Murphy, who led the league with a .500 average, and Marlon Byrd, who was tops with nine RBI and a .556 on-base percentage. Also garnering consideration was Boston's Jon Lester who went 1-0 in two starts with 17 strikeouts and a 0.66 earned-run average.
