UCLA Names Caldwell Head Coach

POSTED: 7:10 pm CDT April 17, 2008

(Sports Network) - UCLA has named Nikki Caldwell its new women's head basketball coach.

The 35-year-old Caldwell had served as an assistant coach for two-time defending national champion Tennessee the last six seasons. She takes over for Kathy Olivier, who resigned last month after posting a record of 232-208 during her 15 seasons as head coach of the Bruins.

During her 14 seasons as a collegiate player at Tennessee and as an assistant coach, Caldwell's teams posted an incredible 404-76 record.

"Tennessee's loss is going to be UCLA's gain," Lady Vols legendary head coach Pat Summitt said. "Nikki Caldwell is truly one of the rising stars in women's college basketball. She is the total package as a teacher, a coach and a recruiter. She is a woman of great character and has a powerful gift of mentoring young women."
