Channel 4 News is the proud recipient of one of the nation's highest honors for investigative reporting from the Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE).

Reporter and anchor Demetria Kalodimos and photojournalist David Sussman have won a national IRE Award for a ground-breaking investigation on radioactive waste being secretly dumped in Tennessee landfills for years. Scroll down to read some of the stories that helped WSMV take home the award.

WSMV's investigation uncovered 20 years of little-known dumping and plans to bring in waste from other countries. This investigation got the attention of Congress and led to a state moratorium on dumping of that waste.

This is the second time in Kalodimos' journalism career that she has won an IRE award.

Channel 4 beat out some of the most competitive investigative teams in the country for this honor.

JUDGES COMMENTS: "This original investigation revealed that the state of Tennessee had for 20 years been allowing the dumping of low-level radioactive waste in ordinary landfills located around the state. They followed the story from the local level all the way to the national, including tracing the origin of much of the radioactive material. The pieces led to dramatic results, state government action and a moratorium on the dumping."
