NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Nashville recording artist Michael W. Smith saw the devastation and hurt in Haiti after the earthquake and wanted to help. So he did what he does best: He wrote a song. And after making some calls, he has a star-studded line-up lending their voices.
The pictures in Haiti are difficult to look at, but Smith said he couldn't turn away."You automatically think, 'What can I do?'" said the Grammy Award-winning artist.Within three days, there were a melody and lyrics. Wednesday, 15 days after the ground shook a nation to its knees, the recording began.Students of New Hope Academy take care of the chorus -- a reminder of sorts of all the Haitian children suffering and orphaned."I was happy and grateful that somebody is listening to Haiti, hearing the people in Haiti's voice," said Careen Sejour of LaVergne Middle School, one of 15 Haitian kids singing Wednesday."One of my cousins, he was taking a shower, and the house fell on him, but we don't know if he's still alive or not," she said.More than 40 artists -- such as Vince Gill, Amy Grant and Wynonna Judd -- are giving their time to the cause."You would hope people would respond to something like this, you know, even if the song was horrible, even if it's horrible, they'd buy it because they know every penny is going to Haiti," said Smith.Everything to make the song possible has been donated, and all proceeds will go to helping Haiti.
