NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Don Helms, a steel guitarist who once played with Hank Williams died Monday morning at the age 81.Helms was known for the opening riff on the Hank Williams' classic "Cold, Cold Heart."As a member of Williams' Drifting Cowboys band, Helms provided a signature steel sound. However, his appeal went beyond country music."An instrument is a beautiful thing no matter what the genre. It's not just country or jazz or rock. It's about melody and touch. No one had touch like him," said songwriter/producer Mark Hudson.Helms is survived by his wife, Hazel.
