Famed Steel Guitarist Dead At 81

Don Helms Played With Hank Williams' Drifting Cowboys Band

Don Helms, a steel guitarist who once played with Hank Williams died Monday morning at the age 81.

Helms was known for the opening riff on the Hank Williams' classic "Cold, Cold Heart."

As a member of Williams' Drifting Cowboys band, Helms provided a signature steel sound. However, his appeal went beyond country music.

"An instrument is a beautiful thing no matter what the genre. It's not just country or jazz or rock. It's about melody and touch. No one had touch like him," said songwriter/producer Mark Hudson.

Helms is survived by his wife, Hazel.
