Country music singer Chris Cagle and his girlfriend, Jennifer Tant, were arrested overnight in Nashville on domestic assault charges.

Police said the couple got into an argument on their way home from a bar and the situation turned abusive.

Neither Cagle, 39, nor his girlfriend would leave the singer's Bellevue apartment once police arrived, so authorities arrested both of them.

Tant said Cagle hit her with a purse, and Cagle said Tant, 29, hit him with an umbrella, according to police.

Karla Weikal of the Davidson County Sheriff's Department said with domestic assault charges, there is a mandatory 12-hour stay in jail before they can post their $1,500 bonds.

Cagle is scheduled to stand trial Sept. 23 in Tucson, Ariz., on a misdemeanor assault charge. He is accused of striking resident Mark Barry on Dec. 13 after a benefit concert.

Police said the singer punched Barry in the face after Barry's girlfriend became verbally abusive toward Cagle.

The singer is best know for his 2001 hit "I Breathe In, I Breathe Out."
