Police: No Personal Information Taken From Laptops

Thorough Tests Run On Computers

On Tuesday, Metro police said they are convinced that there is evidence that no personal information was taken from the laptops stolen from the Metro Election Commission.

They said they came to this resolution after running tests and having computer analysts look at the machines.

"We believe from the investigation and the forensics capacity that we have to understand that those laptops and those hard drives have not been turned on, tampered with or touched. We want to make a cautionary note that if someone was to have very sophisticated equipment and software, they may have been able to image a hard drive, but that is highly unlikely and not probable," said Metro police Chief Ronal Serpas.

Police said that the computers were never powered up after being stolen from the offices in late December. This means that voters’ Social Security numbers could not have been accessed by anyone.

Authorities said there was also a compact disc inside one of the stolen laptops that had been there since November 2006 which had all of the Davidson County's voters' Social Security numbers.

Police said they don't believe that disc had been tampered with either.

The city of Nashville said they will continue to pay for credit fraud protection for a year to all registered voters.
