Two break-ins in two office buildings may have put residents' personal information at risk.

The Department of Safety said it considers Menzler-Nix Hall the most secure building on its campus.

It requires a keycard for entry and reminds employees to make sure the door locks behind them. But all it took for thieves to get in was a rock.

The building houses the Department of Safety's information technology department. So far, the department hasn't said much about the break-in. They said thieves took a computer and several laptops and that some of them may contain sensitive information.

The department won't say what kind of information. Both the Metro Police Department and the state have launched investigations.

There was another break-in that happened on Christmas Eve.

According to police, thieves broke into the Metro office building on Second Avenue. They said the same method of entry was used there.

Two laptops from the Metro Election Commission were taken, one of which contains personal information about every registered voter in Davidson County.

Metro Election Commissioner Ray Barrett said on Thursday that only the last four numbers of Social Security numbers could be found on the computers, but officials said Friday that all nine could be.

Police did not say if they believe the same burglar broke into both buildings.

But people who work in them said they can't help but see the similarities.

Channel 4 confirmed that earlier this month, thieves broke into WKDF’s radio studios, which is right down the street from the Metro office building.

A rock through a window was also used in that invasion.

The Metro Election Commission and the Department of Safety said their computers have special markings engraved on them.

Both departments said they hope anyone who works with computers will be on the lookout for them.
