NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The threat of gang fights has police increasing security at several Metro high schools.
Glencliff High senior Jeffery Mitchell said the situation is out of control. He said that two rival gangs are battling at least twice a week."One fight was bad enough. There was blood on the floor at the school. The fights get pretty hectic. They fight outside and walking up the street going home," said Mitchell. “They are fighting over territory and whatnot.”Wednesday, school security teams and the police gang unit surrounded Glencliff High School during dismissal after getting several tips that members of the Brown Pride and Sur-13 gang were planning a big fight after school.Though not as visible as Wednesday, extra officers were at the school again Thursday.Metro school security director Ralph Thompson said overall discipline problems at Glencliff and most other Metro schools are down from last year. But he points to these two particular gangs as the problem. He said most of the fights have started in the neighborhood."It's not limited to one school. We have about three or four different areas where the Latino gangs are a little more active this year than they've been in a while," said Thompson.Last month, six students suspected of being members of Brown Pride and Sur-13 were arrested at Overton High School."We're going to continue to do things at every school in this district and some of them we choose not to publicize," said Thompson.Thompson said he'll be meeting with Metro police Friday to develop security strategies.
