Alan Coverstone - District 9

Biography
Alan was raised in a family committed to public schools. His Mother, Carol Coverstone, taught in public schools, as do both of his sisters. Alan is an Illinois public school graduate, where he developed his passion for debate. Alan received his B.A. in Speech Communication from Wake Forest University. In 2006, he received his Master of Arts in Teaching, Curriculum, and Instruction.

Alan is the Academic Dean at Montgomery Bell Academy, where he has taught government and debate for 13 years. His wife, Laura, is an Account Executive at Select Staffing, where she helps Nashville area companies select and hire employees. Their two boys, Mitchell and Mason, have attended Metro Public Schools since they were both three. Mason currently attends Hull Jackson Magnet. Mitchell just finished the 4th grade at Hull Jackson and will be attending USN in the fall. Alan and Laura have taught Sunday School together for 6 years, and Alan serves as the Den Leader for the Gower Elementary Tiger Cub Scouts.

Public School Leadership and Administrative Experience
  • Alan helped start the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) at Hull-Jackson in 2004 and served as its first President. This included writing the by-laws, establishing the PTO structure, founding committees, recruiting volunteers, communicating the PTO’s vision, and establishing a partnership between the PTO and the school administration.

  • He has served as Hull-Jackson's elected representative to the Magnet Cluster Parent's group since 2004 and as the Co-Chair in 2007-2008.

  • Alan joined the MNPS citywide Parents' Advisory Council in 2005. This group is a conduit for MNPS parents to offer advice, perspective, and direction to the Director of Schools and the MNPS administration.

  • Alan was appointed to Mayor Purcell's Task Force on Predictable and Adequate Funding for Public Education in 2005.

  • Alan was elected to the Board of the National Debate Coaches Association in 2004. He has served as Treasurer and Secretary of the NDCA Board.

  • Alan was elected President of the Cedar Crest Homeowner's Association in 2006 and served for 2 years.

  • Alan has served as the Academic Dean of Montgomery Bell Academy since 2003, a position which involves advising and directing students, curriculum review, communication with parents, teacher motivation and accountability, and teaching several classes.

  • As a school administrator, Alan is dedicated to educational excellence in every decision he makes.
