Because of budget cuts, Metro Public Works is cutting the number of workers and hours it dedicates to cutting grass in medians and sidewalks.

The crews are in charge of making sure public sidewalks and medians stay neatly kept, but over the years with less money in the budget, it’s become less of a priority.

This year public works will lose 12 positions dedicated to mowing, which leaves them only a few people. Metro said they try to get the crews to make the rounds around the city three times a year.

Public Works first started losing positions three years ago. From there, the cuts have grown.

The city's sheriff's department is working with Metro to try and take on some of the mowing responsibilities by using inmate work crews.

Public Works is encouraging neighborhood groups and business owners to help them out during these tough economic times.

The city will be providing inmate crews with extra equipment to try and pick up the work they can't get to.
