White Bluff’s Kelsie Karnes, 10, is receiving encouragement from the whole community in hopes of lifting the burden off her shoulders. She's been battling cancer since she was 6 years old and diagnosed when she was in kindergarten.

"She's full of life, funny, very smart. You can't be around her without smiling. She's just a lot of fun,” said Kelsie’s mother, Tammy Karnes.

The family is far from alone in their fight against the deadly disease. From the middle school to the local grocery store, there are plenty of signs the town is backing the child. The town is participating in a variety of charity events that are helping to raise money for Kelsie's ever mounting medical bills.

"We're having a bake sale (Saturday) in front of the Chappell's store. Also, we're having a barbecue chicken sale at Liberty Baptist Church on White Bluff Road. Several of the ladies at White Bluff Church of Christ are putting up booths, and we’re going to sell stuff," said Pat Wren, a local deli worker.

Items for sale include beautiful handmade quilts.

The local music store is also getting involved. Kelsie's picture is on its front window, and for $1, a member of the public can go home with a red guitar.

Local florist Heather Hamilton said this is just what members of a close-knit town do to help those in need.

"Since she's been sick, it's been four years of people just being there when we need them to be there. In spite of the bad things we've had to endure, it really does lift our spirits and makes it easier to deal with," said Tammy Karnes.

Kelsie Karnes Week runs though this weekend. Donation jars will be set up in more than a dozen businesses throughout White Bluff, and there will be numerous raffles and sales.
