With school budgets tight these days, it came as very welcome news when a downtown law firm that's moving into a new building decided to donate its previously owned furniture and computers to Metro Schools.

After deciding to leave its former offices, the Bass, Berry and Sims law firm is donating roughly seven floors of furniture, such as desks, chairs, conference tables and computer equipment.

Metro Schools officials are deciding piece-by-piece which school could use the items.

"What they give away after three years are actually better and faster and have more memory than what the schools buy new," said Metro School Board member Kay Simmons.

Keith Simmons is the managing partner of the law firm, which has been in business since the 1922. As he and hundreds of employees move into the new Pinnacle Building, they wanted the schools to receive their donation.

"Lawyers are nice people. We get a bad name. I think we try to be good corporate and individual citizens, and this is part of it, to contribute to what makes our community great. Public schools are right at the heart of that," said Keith Simmons.

The value of the donation, including 230 computers, is estimated at about $300,000.

"It's a great win for them giving things to people that need them, and it's a win for the schools. I just happen to be at the right place at the right time," said Kay Simmons.

"We are trying to make our community as great as it can be. It's been a great community for us and our clients. We want to contribute to it in every way we can," said Keith Simmons.

Metro Schools said it's thrilled to receive the donation and wants other businesses to keep it in mind when they are making donations.
