NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A war hero, who later served as Nashville's police chief, was honored by the Tennessee National Guard on Friday. The guard's new headquarters on Sidco Drive has been named for Maj. General Hugh Mott, a World War II lieutenant who led his team across the bridge at Remagen in western Germany.Mott's actions allowed the 9th Armored division to destroy German resistance. Those who knew him remember him as a great leader and teacher."General Mott's mentoring was always valuable to me personally and he always told me, 'Strive to make things better than the way you found them'. Joe Mott did that, and we should all hope that our legacy mirrors just a portion of General Mott's accomplishments. He was a true Tennessee volunteer," said Maj. Gen. Gus Hargett.Mott served as the 67th adjutant general of the Tennessee National Guard from 1968 to 1971. He died in 2005.
