Hendersonville Home Makeover Family Gets Another Gift

A Hendersonville family whose home was rebuilt by Extreme Home Makeover got an early Christmas gift from local firefighters Friday.

The gift is designed to keep the wheelchair-bound mother and her family safe in an emergency.

The entire house was designed and built by the Extreme Home Makeover TV crew after Amy Hawkins was paralyzed in April's tornadoes.

She was injured while shielding her two sons from their collapsing home.

Four months after they moved in, the family is getting the gift of a sprinkler system.

"This story caught our attention and tugged at our heartstrings. We felt like we've been a part of it,” said Vickie Pritchett of Fire Team USA.

Fire Team USA organized teams of installers from sprinkler companies and three local fire departments.

A manufacturer donated the sprinkler equipment.

Hawkins said she already feels safer with the addition.

"We've always had a plan of what happens in a fire. Being I'm not as mobile as I was, this brings great peace of mind,” she said.

Hawkins’ husband Jerrod Hawkins is a firefighter in Brentwood.

"She's going to be safe, as well as the kids. She doesn't have to worry about getting the kids out through a window. We've got a fulltime fire department in our house,” Jerrod Hawkins said.

Tennessee has the second highest rate of fire deaths in the nation.

Some local fire departments are lobbying for mandatory sprinkler systems in newly built homes.
