Country music stars took the stage on Nashville Tuesday night, but the spotlight was on a seriously injured soldier.

The Home for a Hero concert took place at Greer Stadium to honor and financially assist Kingston Springs, Tenn., native Sgt. Kevin Downs.

The Harpeth High School graduate signed up to join the Tennessee National Guard when he was 17 years old.

Two years later, Downs was serving in Iraq when a roadside bomb explosion burned 60 percent of his body and resulted in the amputation of his legs. Three guardsmen died in the explosion. Fifty-one surgeries have kept Downs in the hospital for two years.

Organizers took in about $100,000. A single benefactor wrote a check for $25,000.

The money will be used to build a home for Downs.
