GAME NOTES: The Wake Forest Demon Deacons and Vanderbilt Commodores step out of their respective conferences to square off in the regular-season finale at BB&T Field in Winston-Salem. Since starting the season 5-0, Vanderbilt has fallen on hard times by dropping five of its last six games. Last weekend, the Commodores put forth a dismal effort in a 20-10 home loss to Tennessee. They've sunk to the middle of the pack in the SEC standings with a 4-4 conference mark. As for the Demon Deacons, they too have assembled a 4-4 ledger in the ACC. Last weekend, they were knocked off by Boston College, 24-21, after allowing the go-ahead touchdown in the waning moments. It was their second consecutive narrow defeat, as they fell to NC State two weeks ago, 21-17. Vanderbilt has a 7-4 lead in the all-time series between the two teams, although Wake Forest won last year's meeting, 31-17.

A big part of the problem for the Commodores' offense last week was their inability to get anything going with the running game. They finished with a mere 25 yards on 28 attempts as a team. As a result, Vandy yielded a 10-plus minute edge in time of possession, as the offense constantly faced long down and distances. Quarterback Mackenzi Adams completed a rather pedestrian 18- of-38 passes for 192 yards and an interception. The Commodores have struggled to move the ball through the air, as they enter this game with the nation's 113th-ranked passing attack. Adams has thrown more interceptions (seven) than touchdowns (five), while he and fellow signal-caller Chris Nickson have completed a rather modest 50 percent of their passes.

Generally speaking, the Vanderbilt defense doesn't allow a whole lot of big plays in the passing game. The Commodores enter this game ranked 16th in the nation in pass defense, yielding just 173 ypg through the air. A big part of the reason for that has been the front-seven's ability to apply pressure, as Vandy leads the SEC in sacks (2.64 per game). Patrick Benoist and Ryan Hamilton (three INT) lead the team with 93 tackles apiece, while Chris Marve (three sacks, four forced fumbles) has logged 88 stops. Hamilton led the way with a game-high 16 tackles against Tennessee, and Benoist finished with 10 tackles.

The Wake Forest offense had trouble moving the ball lately, and against Boston College quarterback Riley Skinner completed just 14-of-28 passes for 126 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. The Demon Deacons also had difficult moving the ball on the ground, amassing a mere 65 yards on 28 carries, with Brandon Pendergrass toted the ball 13 times for 67 yards (5.2 ypc), while Demir Bolden led all receivers in the game with six grabs for 87 yards.

More often than not, the Demon Deacons have been bailed out by their defense. They create turnovers (third-best turnover margin in the nation) and have been stout against both the pass (188.91 ypg) and the run (fourth in the SEC in run defense). The Eagles ran the ball 44 times last week, but managed just 97 yards, while the pass generated just 137 yards, NC State ran the ball 51 times, compared to only nine passing plays the week prior. Wake Forest came up with three fumble recoveries, but lost the time of possession battle by more than 10 minutes and gave up the winning touchdown with just over a minute left in the fourth quarter.

The Demon Deacons are coming off two narrow losses and will be hell-bent on wrapping up the schedule with a win at home. They've had Vanderbilt's number lately, and that should continue in this matchup.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Wake Forest 31, Vanderbilt 24
