Tennessee Tech's Hixon Remains In Coma

POSTED: 7:19 pm EDT September 13, 2004

As a result of a helmet-to-helmet collision on Saturday, Tennessee Tech senior wide receiver Drew Hixon remains in a medically-induced coma in the intensive care unit of St. Joseph's Hospital.

The university and Hixon's family have issued statements regarding Hixon's status.

The incident occurred in the second quarter of the Golden Eagles' 21-7 loss at South Florida. The collision caused Hixon's helmet to come off his head, and he had to be strapped to a backboard and taken to the hospital, where doctors used drugs to induce the coma. He remains in critical condition.

Tests taken at the hospital have indicated that Hixon suffered a brain injury.

He is the son of Washington Redskins assistant coach Stan Hixon.

Prior to the injury, Hixon was Tennessee Tech's leading receiver with 10 catches for 102 yards. The team held a meeting Saturday night in regard to the situation.
