WETUMPKA, Ala. (AP) - Officials say a move to improve inmate security at the Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women has prompted the installation of hundreds of surveillance cameras. Corrections officials say the cameras have been set up at the prison in Wetumpka after a federal report earlier this year complained about safety considerations.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A federal judge says he will take a little more time before issuing a much-awaited ruling on an Alabama law that could close some abortion clinics. Judge Myron Thompson told attorneys in June he hoped to rule by the end of July but now he's advising the attorneys in the case that there'll be no decision before next week.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) - The Madison County Sheriff's Department has reached a settlement with a Tennessee man who said he was beaten by several deputies and wrongfully arrested after an argument at a bar. Attorney Hank Sherrod says his client, Robert Bryant, was satisfied with the $625,000 settlement.

Defending national champion Florida State is ranked No. 1 in the preseason Amway coaches' poll, followed by Alabama in second place. Poll organizers say Alabama received no first-place votes in the polling, adding the top two were followed by Oklahoma, Oregon and Auburn in that order.
