GREENVILLE, Ala. (AP) - A second man is in custody is the shooting death of former University of Alabama football player Ozell Powell. Police in Powell's hometown of Greenville say Samarjay Demontes Peterson has surrendered. Authorities previously charged 22-year-old Eric Simmons in the killing.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) - A Madison County jury has convicted a former teacher's aide accused of sexually abusing a child. Michael Horton had worked in Huntsville's school system. Horton's defense claimed the child's family made up the claims.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - A Tuscaloosa police officer is on leave following his arrest in an alleged domestic dispute. Police say Officer Jimmy Darrell Smith of Cottondale is charged with domestic violence and sodomy. The case has been referred to county investigators.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Federal wildlife officials' are within the law when they declared thousands of acres in Louisiana and Mississippi as 'critical habitat' for an endangered frog species. A federal judge rejected landowners' argument that the Fish and Wildlife Service should have prepared an environmental impact statement on the designation. Landowners worry that the designation could cost more than $33 million in lost development.
